FAQs about Ink: What You Should Know to Get the Right Office Supplies

Researching and finding the right office supplies, specifically ink, can feel like an overwhelming task. It’s difficult to know what type of ink is compatible with the printer, copier, or scanner, or even understand what the types of ink are. DEC Office Solutions, Inc. can help you figure out what the right ink is for your office equipment needs in the Manhattan area. Here are our frequently asked questions about ink and the answers you should know to get the right office supplies.

What types of ink are there?

The three main types of ink on the market are dye-based, pigment-based, and thermal ink.

Dye-Based Ink

Dye-based inks are made up of a few different components, such as dye, water, and glycol. They are referred to as ‘water-soluble’ and are normally used in conventional inkjet printers. Dye-based inks give bold hues and are bright, which makes them great for graphics, images, and photos. They are also good for short-term use, such as children’s coloring projects.

Pigment-Based Ink

Pigment ink is produced with finely grounded pigment particles that are suspended in a liquid form. Pigment-based inks are generally smudge-proof and water-resistant. They require a slightly higher temperature to be used in printers and, because of that, tend to be more expensive than the dye-based inks. Pigment-based inks are ideal for longer-lasting prints that are not overly expressive in their colors.

Thermal Ink

Thermal ink is also known as ‘thermal transfer’ or ‘heat-sealed’ ink. Instead of using a print head to directly form a shape on paper, a heat element transfers the pigments in the ink onto a ribbon — and from then to the paper. Thermal ink gives excellent image quality and offers good resistance to outdoors. It is also called ‘waterproof’ ink because it is not affected by high levels of humidity.

How do I know which ink is compatible with my office equipment?

The type of ink that is right for you all depends on the type of printer you own and its print head technology. Some printers are compatible with all three types of ink, while others can only accept one kind. Since this answer differs for every office machine, it’s important to reference the machine’s manufacturer and model number to find out what kind of ink you need to receive the best results.
